This is an active seat cushion which is used to prevent pressure sores for those who are at very high risk of developing them. It provides alternating support for those who spend long periods of time sitting. We bought this active cushion (along with an electric pump) for our dad who was chair bound and he used it once with a blanket over it but he preferred his memory foam cushion so it is effectively as new. You can adjust the pressure based on the person's weight and the pump is really quiet and will just sit by the side of the chair.
