Charles-François Dumouriez (), general. Letter with handwritten signature & handwritten document, Hamburg (Denmark), 10 October quarto (28 lines) p & 3 p quarto (85 lines). EXCEPTIONAL letter to the general Buonaparte accompanied by a 3 p handwritten document that should have been published. « Général Buonaparte, On vient de m’assurer que vous aviez arreté la publication d’un ouvrage en 4 volumes imprimé à Paris contre moy. Si cela est, je vous dois des remerciements, & rien n’est plus agréable pour moy que de vous avoir cette obligation. Si cela n’est pas, je suis mon inclination en vous écrivant. » He praises Buonaparte whose « le génie a rendu à la France sa splendeur ». He has been living off his pen for seven years, without « solde ou pension d’aucun souverain étranger ». He announces the release of a book, never published, from which he gives an extract from the warning cencerning Buonaparte and continues to praise him, ending his letter by « Quand vous aurez lû cet extrait, vous serez convaincu que personne ne désire plus réellement votre gloire & votre bonheur que le général DuMouriez ». The extract of the warning goes in the same direction. He has « toujours justice à son génie » and talks about « l’époque où la calomnie cherchait à diminuer le mérite de cet homme célèbre ». He even a biography of Buonaparte, who profited from the purchase of Corsica, otherwise « il eut été toute sa vie un être turbulent, ignorant & obscur. Son génie s’est déployé à l’Ecole Militaire. […] C’està la bonté du Roy de France […] qu’il doit tout ce qu’il est ». This document shows also all the faithfulness of Dumouriez « Royalisme […] indestructible en France », calling even repeatedly Buonaparte to restore the Prince legitimate on the throne. The last sentence is eloquent: « Puisse enfin Buonaparte, après avoir été le vainqueur de l’Europe, écraser le monstre hideux de l’Anarchie, & être reconnu dans tous les siècles comme le restaurateur de l’autorité légitime, l’appuy du trône, & le bienfaiteur de sa patrie et de l’Univers ! ».UNIQUENote that the end of , Dumouriez offers his services to Russia, who will refuse, taking a stand for France.
