See photosThe word "root cloth" originated from a certain woven pattern namely the Boteh-Mir motif (pine cone or almond motif) that was compared in the Netherlands with a root. Root cloths have a loosely woven structure with decorative motifs, in warm earthy colours like dark-carmine, dark-green, black and numerous shades of brown. The root canvas is originally from Kashmir and was brought to Europe in the 17th century by travellers. These double woven cloths with varied flower and plant motifs in typical kashmir pattern, were worn by many women as a shawl.
