Actors of the day are dramatically depicted, courageously poised to rush into the scene of a fire, carrying 'Matoi' (decorative poles) in their heavily tattooed arms. Click here to view this lot Utagawa Kunisada (), also known as Toyokuni III was the most productive and successful Japenese artist of the first half of the 19th century. Kunisada's reputation surpassed that of his famous contemporaries Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. In his long career of 55 years, he developed into a versatile artist and designed about pictures. At the moment, there is an exhibition of his works in the Siebolthuis in Leiden, which is the source of this text.The pictures is in fair condition and consists of three individual pictures of 36 high by 35 centimetre, and the frame is 90 by 52 cm.
