Canvas folder, folio [512 x 360 mm], containing a brochure of 77 - (3) pages and 48 numbered colour phototypes depicting the globe, an unnumbered b/w plate with the collection of the plates and an acetate sheet that allows, when placed over the plates, to see the captions transcribed in the essay, thanks to the coordinates that accompany it. Plates framed by a double gold trim, the outer one a little thicker, On the front plate a circular golden trim encloses the title of the work and in the middle the medallion with the portrait of Fra Mauro. On the spine gold title and imprint. Edition commissioned by the City of Venice to celebrate the seventh centenary of the birth of Marco Polo with the competition of the Ministry of Education and the Cini Foundation of Venice under the care of Tullia Gasparrini Leporace, director of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, where the map is kept. The world map is the highest monument of medieval cartography, it is probably a copy of the one made by the Venetian Fra Mauro at the request of the king of Portugal Alfonso, to whom work was sent in . Although, perhaps, it was preserved in in the monastery of Alcobaza in Portugal, it is now lost. Fra Mauro was a Camaldolese from the convent of S. Since the monastery's registers recall the purchase of colours and gold for his works, together with the name of two collaborators: Francesco da Cres and Andrea Bianco, the latter author of a nautical atlas of and a map of . He died before October , when, also in the convent's records, it is remembered that the copies of the globes, drawings and writings had been deposited in S.
