DIY Boat Building Plans for RYE BAY 228 Motor, Rowing,
I designed this dinghy in the "stitch & tape" plywood boat building method over 20 years ago. They have been built worldwide and have proved a very popular dinghy. It is also very versatile as it can be built to row, motor and sail. The rig is easily set up and taken down, a small outboard motor can be mounted on the transom and the plans include the details on how to make a pair of oars. The finished dinghy is 2.28m (7'-6") Loa x 4'-0" Beam with a dry weight of about 25kg (55lbs). It will take a maximum load of 225kg (500lbs) which is plenty for two adults and some gear when rowing (one adult is more comfortable when sailing). The plans detail the sailing rig and dimensions for the sail. An Optimist sail and rig has been used on this boat and worked well. The plans come with full instructions to build the boat to row, motor and sail. There is full size patterns for the main hull parts - Bottom Panel, Planks, Transom, Frame and Trim. I have several sets of these plans for sale and you can see my other designs on my website.
