Violin - Full size - Savart Style

For sale here is a full sized Savart style violin. It has a spruce soundboard with pear sides and maple back and neck. The fingerboard is tulip with and African black wood nut. In spite of its modern straight lines and high bridge the design of this instrument is 200 years old! Savart took the idea of the violin back to first principles of engineering which basically meant that for sound to be carried through material efficiently it needs to travel unhindered by cuts and contours in the wood. The sound holes were reduced to straight slots, in line with the grain, and the waist was removed. In a blind test at the Paris Conservatoir eminent professors concluded that the Savart violin sounded better than the two best violins of the day. Once they were told they had chosen the Savart they retracted their vote! A great piece of music history and a sensible piece of design. Maker Sanders Design
