Robert Burns Poetry - Vintage Book

Robert Burns Poetry - Vintage Book

I have for sale this book, printed in , of Burns poetry. The binding is contemporary for the age of the book. It is in good/fair condition (who wouldn't be at that age!!). There is some foxing and browning on the edges of the pages but there are no pages missing. As can be appreciated, the hard covers have seen many years of wear and tear but could possibly be rebound although it would detract from the obvious age of the book. The book includes chronology of his life and works. Read More

The Sun Unwound: Poems from Occupied America

The Sun Unwound: Poems from Occupied America

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brotherston, Gordon / Dorn, Edward, PUBLISHER: North Atlantic Books, The result of a 20-year collaboration between poet Edward Dorn and scholar Gordon Brotherston, "The Sun Unwound" gathers together the disparate voices of oppressed Americans through the centuries: the hymns, songs, and prayers of Mesoamericans and other native peoples; the verse of eight Latin American guerrillas of the 's; and works by three of Latin America's most important avant-garde poets of the twentieth century. The Native Americans saw their cultures obliterated, most of the guerrillas died in their struggles, and the modernists have faced persecution, prison, and torture for their left-wing convictions. Previously untranslated or unavailable to most North Americans, their poems offer a striking counterpoint to the colonialist, capitalist, Anglo-Saxon ethos.

Landscape with Rowers: Poetry from the Netherlands

Landscape with Rowers: Poetry from the Netherlands

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Coetzee, J. M., PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, Though the Netherlands has been the site of vigorous literary activity since at least the "Beweging van Vijftig" (Movement of the Fifties) poets, the status of Dutch as a "minor" language spoken by only twenty-two million people has kept its rich poetry more or less a secret. This volume--featuring J. M. Coetzee's finely wrought English translations side-by-side with the originals--brings the work of six of the most important modern and contemporary Dutch poets to light. Ranging in style from the rhetorical to the intensely lyrical, the work here includes examples of myth-influenced modernist verse, nature poetry, experimental poetry, poems conscious of themselves within a pan-European avant-garde, and Cees Nooteboom's uncompromising reflections on the powers and limitations of art. In addition to Nooteboom, the poets represented are Gerrit Achterberg, Hugo Claus, Sybren Polet, Hans Faverey, and Rutger Kopland--a who's who of contemporary Dutch poetry. In "Youth," Coetzee's main character claims that "of all nations the Dutch are the dullest, the most antipoetic." With these marvelous translations, the author proves his protagonist wrong.

The Poetry of Thought: From Hellenism to Celan (Hardcover)

The Poetry of Thought: From Hellenism to Celan (Hardcover)

With his hallmark forceful discernment,George Steiner presents in The Poetry of Thought his magnum opus: an examination of more than two millennia of Western culture, staking out his claim for the essential oneness of great thought and great style. Sweeping yet precise, moving from essential detail to bracing illustration,Steiner spans the entire history of philosophy in the West as it entwines with literature, finding that,as Sartre stated,in all philosophy there is “a hidden literary prose.”

Stars at Noon: Poems from the Life of Jacqueline Cochran

Stars at Noon: Poems from the Life of Jacqueline Cochran

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shomer, Enid, PUBLISHER: University of Arkansas Press, These poems give voice to the life of the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound. While Jacqueline Cochran was alive, no man or woman in the world could match her records for speed, distance, and altitude flying. Founder and director of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II, Cochran continued to fly competitively until she was sixty, owned and operated her own line of designer cosmetics for three decades, ran for Congress, and generally placed herself on the path of history. Having begun life as a foundling in the crushing poverty of a lumber company town of the Florida panhandle, she described her life as "a passage from sawdust to stardust". Yet after her death she has barely been remembered. Poet Enid Shomer brings back this mercurial, dazzling, powerful woman. These poems speak in her voice and in the voices of her mother, teachers, husband, confidants, and political opponents, shaped by Shomer's consummate formal control and stunning lyricism. Illustrated with photographs.

Poetry of Mourning: The Modern Elegy from Hardy to Heaney

Poetry of Mourning: The Modern Elegy from Hardy to Heaney

Called the "mother of beauty" by Wallace Stevens, death has been perhaps the favorite muse of modern poets. From Langston Hughes's lynch poems to Sylvia Plath's father elegies, modern poetry has tried to find a language of mourning in an age of mass death, religious doubt, and forgotten ritual. For this reason,Jahan Ramazani argues, the elegy, one of the most ancient of poetic genres, has remained one of the most vital to modern poets. Through subtle readings of elegies,self-elegies,
