Very Rare Chinese 19c Faux Tortoise Brise Fan Eventail...
Very Rare Chinese 19c Faux Tortoise Brise Fan Eventail, Very Rare Antique Chinese 19th century Faux Tortoise Lacquer Brise FanThis is very Rare Faux Tortoise Silver Lacquer Brise fan.Sticks are made from faux tortoise with decoration on both sides with Silver lacquer. The decoration is made as on looking glass, which means when looking through fan over the light, the position of the decoration correspond to the other side. Fans with Silver lacquer are quite rare.Neville John Irons in the book "Fans of Imperial China" wrote: " Silver lacquer as in this example is rare and few could have been made, almost none have survived as the silver oxidizes and the surface is easily rubbed."This fan is ilustrated in our last photo, and seems to be the only example so far published. This proves that combination of Silver lacquer and tortoise is even more rare.Ribbon is replaced.Rivet is also made of faux tortoise.(one side of the fan is partly cleaned and the other side is with original beautiful patina made on oxidated silver). Due to specific of silver lacquer and transparent tortoise body,it is very difficult to capture with camera fan in its real glory. Some parts that are still dark look like loss of lacquer which is not the case. Please look at the photos carefully!!!AGE:CONDITION:On 3 sticks there are very small parts missing on the edge, like rubbing, and one chip of 5 mm.Minimal rubbing of the lacquer.Replaced ribbon.Othervise perfect!Dimensions:H-23.5 cm,W-42,5cm(2,5 cm=1 INCH) £, Glasgow, .
