For the collectors, A most Beautiful and Rare - Committee Acoustic Guitar (Vintage) Serial No (registered) 'Hofner website' Top of the regular range of Hofner archtops, the Committee was designed to impress. The Committee sported the over-large "frondose" headstock (this one) up to , when this was replaced by a President size headstock, but still retaining the impressive "tulip" style mother of pearl inlays in the facia. Birds eye maple veneer was almost exclusively used for the body back and sides, with carved solid spruce body tops, although these seem to have been replaced with laminated tops during the 's, The Committee retained its single Venetian (rounded) body cutaway throughout its production span, which ended around about .. The neck is made of maple and mahogany in a five-part construction, and is supported by an ebony fingerboard; Splendid inlays tell the player the locations. The characteristic 'high-end' frondose headstock signifies this to be one of Hofners better guitars of the time. The only guitar which has rivalled it is my newly acquired 67 braz martin D-28 and as they're both so similar one has to go. Stuart Mossman is considered by many to be the world’s first boutique guitar builder. During a relatively short period that began in the late s and ended in , he and a group of devoted artisans built high-quality acoustic guitars in Winfield, Kansas. Although exact numbers are hard to come by, it’s probably safe to say that the small Mossman shop produced only about instruments during that time, which helps to explain why they are relatively rare and highly desirable in the used market. Similar to a Martin D-35, this Great Plains combines a beautiful three-piece Rosewood back with a Sitka Spruce top.
