Pair of Original Victorian design Chesterfield armchairs with matching foot stools (pristine). There are two kinds of Chesterfield furniture- the mass produced stuff that lasts 5-10 years and then the original high-end constructions, designed to last a lifetime or two ! These are the latter: solid hardwood frames to ensure longevity; arms, backs and seats all coil sprung and extensively buttoned; screwed bases and stitched leather, rather than staple gunned and glued for 'good value'. These are statement pieces. I cannot find any other examples on the internet. They were the most expensive items of furniture on sale in Ponsford's Furniture Department store in (Sheffield's premier furniture store est. ). Since then they have only had one careful lady owner. There is nothing really comparable in terms of quality, craftsmanship and detail I have been able to locate. Consider for example Ponsford's current Chesterfield-style Halo Chester 3 seater (£ each) - no doubt quality for today but frankly no comparison with what was available (albeit at a huge price) 35 years ago. The urgent need to de-clutter the house prior to putting the property on the market prompts this sale (they originally came from a larger property). Matching pair of Victorian or Edaardian Club style armchairs. I know the provenance of these lovely chairs back to as they have been in the family since then, although we believe them to be from slightly earlier than that. They are in the club chair style made famous by Howard and Sons. Rare to find as a matched pair. In good structural condition with a few marks and wear here and there, mostly to the fabric covering. Oak frames and legs. Original brass castors. Modern blue fabric fitted in that replaced a non-original moquette from the s. Actually I would say that anyone who enjoys furniture restoration as a hobby will find these relatively simple to tackle and I have listed all the relevant points as I see them below. The chairs were originally covered in burgundy button-backed leather. This has been removed and discarded from one and partly removed from the second. They could of course be recovered in either leather or cloth. Most of the original horse-hair stuffing and lining material is still present, plus the webbing and all springs look very good. The castors are all there but there is some wear to the bores of the brass plates so the chairs sit lower than they should. The ceramic wheels look good. The mahogany frames look very good to me. Obviously they will need some refinishing work but I can't see any damage or sign of worm. The chairs' approx. measurements in inches are 35 high x 36 deep x 24 wide.
