In , Gurwitschs monograph "Morphology and biology of the cell" appeared, for which he gained international recognition as a histologist.Later, he took over a professorship of anatomy and histology at the Bestuzhev female College in St. Petersburg. During this time he formed his general conceptual approach to understand biological problems. He was one of the few biologists who possessed excellent knowledge in physics and mathematics. One of Gurwitschs's closest friends was the physicist and late member of the Academy of Sciences Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam. He familiarized Gurwitsch with the theories of Einstein. Carl Adolf Schmidt - Atlas der Diatomaceen-Kunde - 4

Carl Adolf Schmidt - Atlas der Diatomaceen-Kunde - 4

This concerns a special set of four octavo copies with illustrations from Schmidt’s ‘Atlas der Diatomaceenkunde’. The original atlas was published over many years ( through ) in loose parts. This edition concerns a bundling of all 400 published illustrations in reduced photocopy. The size of the illustration has been reduced to 15 x 11 cm in order to make it a usable edition. Probably made in a very small print run to be used by researchers and scientists. The books do not contain direct information on how this edition was made. The last illustrations that were included were originally published in , so that must be the year that this edition was made. Looking at the marbled covers and the used (copy) paper, it is likely to be a pre-war edition. These copies have gone through quite a journey. They are signed and carry the stamp of an Indian biologist R. Subrahmanyan in Madras. They subsequently ended up in the library of Wageningen University before I laid my hands on them.A complete set seldom comes to market. Although read, the copies are in good condition and can easily be used. The cover and binding are fine with only some minor signs of use. As can be seen in the photos, the pages have warped a bit just as what happens to old bibles without a proper lock. There is also some light discolouration as can be seen in the photos. All in all a nice set. Read More
