Background: Teotihuacan was a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican city located in the Valley of Mexico, 30 miles northeast of modern-day Mexico City. The name Teōtīhuacān was given by the Nahuatl-speaking Aztec centuries after the fall of the city meaning "place where gods were born". The city reached its peak in AD 450, when it was the center of a powerful culture whose influence extended through much of the Mesoamerican region with a population of about people. The Teotihuacan heads were probably used as personal totems, funerary figures or token sacrifies.
