Dr. J. Aalbers e.a. - De geschiedenis van de provincie
The ‘Geschiedenis van de province Utrecht’ series provides a complete overview of the history of the province, from prehistory to the present. All aspects of Utrecht history are discussed: the historical-geographical, demographic, economic, social, political-administrative, institutional, cultural-historical and Church history. Attention is also paid to the relationship between people and the environment, which is reflected in, among others, the reclamations in the Middle Ages, peat harvesting and reclamations in the 16th-19th century and a changed landscape due to the urbanization in the 20th century. The history of the province of Utrecht has been described in three substantial volumes by 27 authors in more than pages. The first volume describes the history up to , when Charles V became emperor. The second volume describes the history up to , the eve of Batavian times. The books have a thematic structure and a lot of attention is paid to social-economic and cultural history. The editors decided against a scientific series: notes in an academic form are missing. However, the quality of the contributions are still excellent and through excellently thought-out biographies in each volume one can quickly find the sources. The books are richly illustrated with often beautiful images in colour and in black and white. Each volume ends with a comprehensive index, the last volume contains a literature description of 26 pages.Particularly the descriptions in the first volume transcend the province borders: a lot of what is described in this volume is also of interest for the adjacent areas. In conclusion, the series is a fine and easy-to-read historiography for a wide audience.Beautiful edition. 3 volumes in one slipcase. In excellent condition.
