Regions: The Economics and Politics of Territory

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Markusen, Ann / Text, Need, PUBLISHER: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Ann Markusen, one of the foremost theoreticians of regional development, has produced a book destined to become a classic in its field. Regions is a penetrating and innovative study of the political and economic aspects of American regionalism. Using historical materialism as a methodological foundation, the author analyzes the historical developments and contemporary issues of American regionalism. She contends that territorial differentiation and conflicts have emerged as major determinants in the spatial transformation of American regions. The book is rich in historical facts and case studies that are used to illuminate the theoretical dimensions of the contemporary public policy debates on regionalism.

Congress and the Politics of National Security

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Auerswald, David P. / Campbell, Colton C., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In an increasingly complex and unpredictable world, a growing number of observers and practitioners have called for a reexamination of our national security system. Central to any such reform effort is an evaluation of Congress. Is Congress adequately organized to deal with national security issues in an integrated and coordinated manner? How have developments in Congress over the past few decades, such as heightened partisanship, message politics, party committee relationships, and bicameral relations, affected topical security issues? This volume examines variation in the ways Congress has engaged federal agencies overseeing our nation's national security as well as various domestic political determinants of security policy.

Fenced Off: The Suburbanization of American Politics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gainsborough, Juliet F., PUBLISHER: Georgetown University Press, Since the s a distinctive suburban politics has emerged in the United States, Juliet F. Gainsborough argues in Fenced Off. As suburbs have become less economically and socially dependent on the central cities, suburban and urban dwellers have diverged not only in their voting patterns but also in their thinking about national politics. While political reporters have long noted this difference, few quantitative studies have been conducted on suburbanization -- above and beyond race or class -- as a political trend. Using census and public opinion statistics, along with data on congressional districts and party platforms, Gainsborough demonstrates that this "ideology of localism" weakens when suburbs experience city-like problems and strengthens when racial and economic differences with the nearby city increase. In addition, Gainsborough uses national survey data from the s to the s to show that a separate suburban politics has arisen only during the last two decades. Further, she argues, the political differences between urban and suburban voters have found expression in changes in congressional representation and new electoral strategies for the major political parties. As Congressional districts become increasingly suburban, "soccer moms" and liveability agendas come to dominate party platforms, and the needs of the urban poor disappear from political debate. Fenced Off uses the tools of political science to prove what political commentators have sensed -- that the suburbs offer a powerful voting bloc that is being courted with sophisticated new strategies.

Punk Rock and the Politics of Place

Punk Rock and the Politics of Place

Punk Rock and the Politics of Place: This book is an ethnographic investigation of punk subculture as well as a treatise on the importance of place: a location with both physical form and cultural meaning. Rather than examining punk as a "e sound"e or a "e style"e as many previous works have done, it investigates the places that the subculture occupies and the cultural practices tied to those spaces. Since social groups need spaces of their own to practice their way of life, this work relates punk values and practices to the forms of their built environments. As not all social groups have an equal ability to secure their own spaces, the book also explores the strategies punks use to maintain space and what happens when they fail to do so.

Rearranging The Landscape Of The Gods: The Politics Of A

When people create new societies, economies, and nations--both now and in the past--they create gods, rituals, and miracles to support them. Even what seem to be some of the most timeless and sacred sites in the world have been shaped, reshaped, and reinterpreted by countless people to produce oases of peace and nature today. Using miracle tales, votive plaques, diaries, and newspapers,Sarah Thal traces such changes at one of the most popular Japanese pilgrimage sites of the nineteenth and twen

The Politics of Rights: Lawyers, Public Policy, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scheingold, Stuart A. / Feeley, Malcolm M., PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, Stuart A. Scheingold's landmark work introduced a new understanding of the contribution of rights to progressive social movements, and thirty years later it still stands as a pioneering and provocative work, bridging political science and sociolegal studies. In the preface to this new edition, the author provides a cogent analysis of the burgeoning scholarship that has been built on the foundations laid in his original volume. A new foreword from Malcolm Feeley of Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law traces the intellectual roots of "The Politics of Rights" to the classic texts of social theory and sociolegal studies. "Scheingold presents a clear, thoughtful discussion of the ways in which rights can both empower and constrain those seeking change in American society. While much of the writing on rights is abstract and obscure, "The Politics of Rights" stands out as an accessible and engaging discussion." -Gerald N. Rosenberg, University of Chicago "This book has already exerted an enormous influence on two generations of scholars. It has had an enormous influence on political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists, as well as historians and legal scholars. With this new edition, this influence is likely to continue for still more generations. "The Politics of Rights" has, I believe, become an American classic." -Malcolm Feeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley, from the foreword Stuart A. Scheingold is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Washington.

Pistoleros and Popular Movements: The Politics of State

Pistoleros and Popular Movements: The Politics of State

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Smith, Benjamin, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, The postrevolutionary reconstruction of the Mexican government did not easily or immediately reach all corners of the country. At every level, political intermediaries negotiated, resisted, appropriated, or ignored the dictates of the central government. National policy reverberated through Mexico's local and political networks in countless different ways and resulted in a myriad of regional arrangements. It is this process of diffusion, politicking, and conflict that Benjamin T. Smith examines in "Pistoleros and Popular Movements." Oaxaca's urban social movements and the tension between federal, state, and local governments illuminate the multivalent contradictions, fragmentations, and crises of the state-building effort at the regional level. A better understanding of these local transformations yields a more realistic overall view of the national project of state building. Smith places Oaxaca within this larger framework of postrevolutionary Mexico by comparing the region to other states and linking local politics to state and national developments. Drawing on an impressive range of regional case studies, this volume is a comprehensive and engaging study of postrevolutionary Oaxaca's role in the formation of modern Mexico.

Lucas explores how the monarchy in Jordan survived economic crisis and regional political instability during the s. Lucas analyzes the factors behind the successful liberalization and deliberalizations of laws regulating political parties, the parliament, and the press that helped preserve the monarchy. These institutional survival strategies co-opted the opposition, kept it divided, and reinforced the unity of the regime's coalition of supporters. The author also compares survival strategies in Jordan with those of Morocco. Kuwait, Iran, and Egypt to explain the surprising durability of authoritarian regimes in the Middle East.

Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping

Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping

Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping: Renowned for his coverage of China&apos s elite politics and leadership transitions, veteran Sinologist Willy Lam has produced the first book-length study in English of the rise of Xi Jinping--General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since November . With rare insight, Lam describes Xi&apos s personal history and his fascination with quasi-Maoist values, the factional politics through which he ascended, the configuration of power of the Fifth-Generation leadership, and the country&apos s likely future directions under the charismatic " princeling." Despite an undistinguished career as a provincial administrator, Xi has rapidly amassed more power than his predecessors. He has overawed his rivals and shaken up the party-state hierarchy by launching large-scale anti-corruption and rectification campaigns. With a strong power base in the People&apos s Liberation Army and a vision of China as an " awakening lion," Xi has been flexing China&apos s military muscle in sovereignty rows with countries including Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines while trying to undermine the influence of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region. While Xi is still fine-tuning his art of governance, his zero tolerance for dissent and his preoccupation with upholding the privileges of the " red aristocracy" and the CCP&apos s status as " perennial ruling party" do not bode well for economic, political, or cultural reforms. Lam takes a close look at Xi&apos s ideological and political profile and considers how his conservative outlook might shape what the new strongman calls " the Great Renaissance of the Chinese race."

But what are we buying into when we read these stories as texts in English-language translations? Cristina Bacchilega poses this question in her examination of the way these stories have been adapted to produce a legendary Hawai'i primarily for non-Hawaiian readers or other audiences. With an understanding of tradition that foregrounds history and change,Bacchilega examines

Shogunal Politics: Arai Hakuseki and the Premises of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nakai, Kate Wildman, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Arai Hakuseki, advisor to the sixth and seventh Tokugawa shogun, played an important role in politics between and , during an era of large changes in the bakufu. He participated in major policy decisions on currency, foreign trade, and local administration, while simultaneously trying to enhance the shogun's authority both within the bakufu and as a national ruler. The following shogun retained Hakuseki's fiscal and trade policies, but promptly reversed those measures designed to make the shogun a king-like figure. Nakai examines these successes and failures against the background of the time, especially the bifurcated and ambiguous distribution of authority between the Tokugawa shogun and the tenno in Kyoto. She also traces the influence of Confucian political theory on Hakuseki's program and on his defense of that program in the face of criticism. Nakai draws upon Hakuseki's autobiography and diary and the reportorial letters of a contemporary for Hakuseki's political activities, and on Hakuseki's historical works and memorials for the theoretical basis for his programs, rooted in Confucianism. Illustrative and lively translations from Hakuseki enrich the book, helping to portray a multi-faceted personality who managed to blend practical politics and Confucian idealism within the complicated and dynamic environment of the early-eighteenth-century bakufu.

Teaching Law: Justice,Politics, and the Demands of

Teaching Law reimagines law-school teaching and scholarship by going beyond crises now besetting the legal academy and examining deeper and longer-lasting challenges. The book argues that the legal academy has long neglected the needs to focus teaching and scholarship on the ideals of justice that law fitfully serves, the political origins of law,and the development of a respectful but critical relationship with the legal profession. This book suggests reforms to improve the quality of legal education and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: James, Heather / Orgel, Stephen / Barton, Anne, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Heather James argues that Shakespeare's use of Virgil, Ovid and other classical sources demonstrates the appropriation of classical authority in the interests of developing a national myth. She goes on to distinguish Shakespeare's deployment of the myth--notably in Troilus and Cressida, Antony and Cleopatra, Cymbeline, and The Tempest--from "official" Tudor and Stuart ideology, and to show how Shakespeare participates in the larger cultural project of finding historical legitimacy for Britain as a realm asserting its status as an empire.

The Politics of Policies: Economic and Social Progress in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Inter-American Development Bank, Development Bank / Int-Amer Dev Bank, Dev Bank / Inter-American Development Bank, PUBLISHER: David Rockefeller Center for Latin American S, This volume appears after more than a decade of political and economic reforms in Latin America. The success of these reforms--and the quality of public policies--has varied widely. As a result, it has become clear that good policy "recipes" are not enough. Specific policy recipes, no matter how well conceived, are necessary but not sufficient for success. Only by improving the policymaking process can we expect sustainable improvements in public policies and in their impact on development and people's lives. This study analyzes how the workings of the policymaking process affect the quality of policy outcomes. It looks beyond a purely technocratic approach to policymaking, delving into the messy world of politics. It argues that the political process and the policymaking process are inseparable, and that failing to understand one risks failure with the other. It offers a wide variety of examples and case studies, using an analytical framework that can help explain why policies that work in certain institutional environments may not work in others. The study also yields useful insights for the design of effective policy reform.
