The Party Line: How the Media Dictates Public Opinion in Modern China: The first in-depth, authoritative discussion of the role of the press in China and the way the Chinese government uses the media to shape public opinion China's 1.3 billion population may make the country the world's largest, but the vast majority of Chinese share remarkably similar views on these and a wide array of other issues, thanks to the unified message they get from tightly controlled state-run media. Official views are formed at the top in organizations like the Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television and allowed to trickle down to regional and local media, giving the appearance of many voices with a single message that is reinforced at every level. As a result, the Chinese are remarkably like-minded on a wide range of issues both domestic and foreign. Takes readers beyond China's economic miracle to show how the nation's massive state-run media complex not only influences public opinion but creates it Explores an array of issues, from Tibet and Taiwan to the environment and US trade relations, as seen through the lens of the Xinhua News Agency Tells the story of the official Xinhua News Agency along with its history and reporting over the years, as the foundation for telling the story

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Drori, Israel, PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, Many Arab communities in Israel's Galilee region are home to export-oriented textile factories, owned by multinational corporations, whose Jewish managers employ local Arab and Druse women as seamstresses and low-level work supervisors. Based on five years of ethnographic research, this book explores how these managers and workers negotiate the terms and meanings of factory work, integrating work culture with the norms and values of the host towns in order for employment arrangements to succeed. The entrance of industrial corporations into developing areas of the world, particularly in those industries employing primarily women, has generated tension between traditional familial and social roles and the demands of industrial working life. In Israel these tensions are further complicated by the social and political dynamics of Arab-Jewish conflict, as well as the strictly demarcated roles of women and men in traditional Arab society. The resolution of these tensions on the shop floor shapes the social relations of production, the factories' management systems, family life in the industrial towns, and individual status and autonomy. The negotiation involves unequal power relations, manifested in a dual patriarchal structure: the Arab cultural practice of male domination of women as well as the formal management system of the textile concern, which dictates the nature of relationships between Jewish managers and Arab women workers. To meet their business goals, the managers must cooperate with the community that provides their workforce, adapting its norms and appropriating its worldview. The managers are constrained by the strict social rules of Arab and Druse society, and respond by attempting to harness and manipulate local family values to foster personal commitment, furthering production goals through paternal control. The consequence of this paternalism is a workforce that relates to the organization as family, identifies with its goals, and internalizes feelings of loyalty. However, the workforce also uses the plant as the arena for developing self-awareness and enhancing personal independence and status within the family. The seamstresses emerge as active shapers of the organizational culture, forcing the managers to adapt to and comply with their personal needs and perceptions of work.

The Power to Destroy: How the IRS Became America's Most

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Roth, William V., Jr. / William V Roth / Nixon, William H., PUBLISHER: Atlantic Monthly Press, The IRS is one of the most powerful agencies in the U.S. government, and since its founding it has been plagued by accusations of abuses of power. In Senator William Roth spearheaded the most extensive reform effort in IRS history, resulting in the Internal Revenue Service Restructuring Bill, which passed the Senate 97-0 on May . Designed to increase taxpayer protections, provide oversight of the agency's managers and employees, and open up the culture of secrecy that has come to characterize the modern tax-collecting agency, the legislation has ushered in a new era in income tax. In The Power to Destroy, Senator William V. Roth, Jr., offers a behind-the-scenes account of a story that has captivated America. He outlines a brief history of how the IRS became a law unto itself and how it has destroyed the lives of ordinary Americans -- many of whom will never recover from their experiences. The horror stories from taxpayers and agency employees that Roth's investigation uncovered elicited a public outcry that demanded immediate action, from Capitol Hill to the White House, and Roth details how these stories translated into specific initiatives that served as the foundation for the actual restructuring legislation.

How We Missed the Story: Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gutman, Roy, PUBLISHER: Potomac Books, "Roy Gutman, a tireless reporter, has written a deeply researched and fascinating account of the various U.S. foreign policy failures that helped account for the rise of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks. Gutman also explains how so many institutions in the United States, from the media to the national security establishment, largely missed what would turn out to be one of the most important stories of our time." -Peter Bergen, author of "Holy War, Inc.," and "The Osama bin Laden I Know" "This well-written, on-the-mark book is an informative and entertaining read. No other study that examines the events leading up to 9/11 is as persuasive in placing the blame where it belongs-on the failure of three successive U.S. presidents to provide the foreign policy leadership and direction needed to address the politics, philosophy, and disposition to violence of Islamist extremism." -Thomas E. Gouttierre, dean, International Studies and Programs, University of Nebraska at Omaha Focusing principally on events and policy missteps in Afghanistan in the s and s, award-winning journalist Roy Gutman weaves a narrative that exposes how and why the U.S. government, the United Nations, and the Western media "missed the story" in the lead-up to 9/11. Advancing his narrative carefully and persuasively, he approaches his subject with an objective, journalistic eye and draws heavily on his own original research and extensive interviews with key players both in the United States and abroad. Arguing that the U.S. government made a strategic mistake by categorizing bin Laden's murderous assaults prior to 9/11 as terrorism, he ultimately concludes that the core failure was in the field of U.S. foreign policy. Sure to attract a wide audience, this first-rate, deeply engaging volume makes an original contribution to our understanding of the events and mistakes that ultimately led to 9/11-and offers much-needed insight so that such a story is not missed again.
