The 230 previously unpublished photographs in this important book were taken mainly in the mid and late s by members of the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle. The Circle was founded in from the cream of active railway photographers to encourage and explore progressive and experimental apptoaches to the photography of diesel and electric rail traction. The book reflects the Circle’s abiding aim of taking railway-photography beyond the confines of mere photographic records, unto a fuller and more vivid re-creation of the experience of contemplating railways and also, sometimes, into the realm of art. It will help to expand the frontiers of railway-photographic taste by demonstrating that photography of diesel and electric traction can be as exciting and as beautiful as that of steam. It will appeal to all railway enthusiasts but particularly to those who are activfely interested in modern traction, and who are looking for more in a railway photograph than a rivet-counting visual record – looking, in fact, for the vivid pictorial representation of trains in their total environment. Accordingly, most of the sections into which the book is divided emphasise discreetly aspects of the environment in which the railway operates: stations, open country, or heavy industrial landscape; varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions: and the people – travellers, railway workers or just watchers – who come and go around the trains. It is hoped indeed, that the broad pictorial emphasis found in this book will help to carry the appeal of railways to those who would not normally consider themselves enthusiasts, and help them to experience some of the interest and excitement of modern railways for the first time. Trains of British Rail, Irish railways and London Transport are depicted, but no attempt made to cover all the types of diesel or electric traction at work on these systems, or to give comprehensive geographical coverage – the accent at all times is on railway pictures as pictures.
