The Japanese Consumer: An Alternative Economic History of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Francks, Penelope, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, By the late twentieth century, Japanese people were renowned as the world's most avid and knowledgeable consumers of fashion, luxury and quality, while the goods that embodied their tastes and lifestyle were becoming a part of global culture. Penelope Francks' book offers an alternative account of Japan's modern economic history from the perspective of the consumer. Tracing Japan's economy from the eighteenth century to the present, she shows how history has conditioned what Japanese people consume and compares their experiences with those of Europe and North America. In so doing the author presents a lucid and informed account of everyday life in Japan, exploring what people eat, how they dress, the household goods they acquire, and their preferred shopping and leisure activities. This beautifully illustrated book succeeds in making economic history palatable and entertaining. It will be a treat for students and all those interested in Japanese society and culture.

The Line Upon a Wind: An Intimate History of the Last and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mostert, Noel, PUBLISHER: Vintage, An Intimate History of the Last and Greatest War Fought at Sea Under Sail: . Following his acclaimed Frontiers, Noel Mostert's new book chronicles the first true "world war." In February , France declared war on Britain and Holland. The Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars that raged for the next twenty-two years saw European powers manoeuvering for mercantile and political advantage in a complex and ever-changing web of alliances and coalitions. By , the world was a different place; age-old certainties were shattered, established dynasties and kingdoms overthrown, the United States emerged as a world power, and a new age was dawning. This was to be the longest, hardest and cruelest war ever fought at sea, on a scale comparable only with the Second World War. Methods of battle under sail, little changed for centuries, would be forced to adapt at an unprecedented pace that brought with it the fearsome power of rockets, torpedoes and submarines. The Line Upon a Wind is also the story of the daily lives of the sailors on board the fighting ships, the blood and guts ferocity of engagement in an age of gentility, the struggle of ships' surgeons to repair broken bodies and the daily struggle to keep the men fed and free of disease. It is a story of ordinary men and extraordinary bravery. The Great War, as it was known to contemporaries, spanned generations and continents. Noel Mostert has achieved a work of unparalleled research, rousing descriptions and illuminating analysis -- maritime history at its very best. "From the Hardcover edition." Buy Now

500 Nations, an Illustrated History of North American Indians. Not a book for the Emotional

500 NATIONS, By Alvin M.Josephy, jr An illustrated History of North American Indian nations. How they lived (and died). How the West was won, at the expense of almost every native tribe, from the Inca to the Inuit and almost every Plains and Desert dwelling tribe that occupied North America. Harrowing in many places, to read the documented accounts of how the numerous tribes were decimated by the invasion from the white man. Beautifully illustrated, with many archive publications depicting the primitive manner in which the tribes lived. Their own battles to survive, and the pacts that they formed. From Farmers to Warriors, this book has to be read from start to finish, in order to understand but a little of the harsh, yet wonderful lifestyles, that these ancient peoples endured. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading, and the picture really do bring the accounts to life, superbly written whilst maintaining a sense of accuracy from the research material used. With about 400 pages, it's difficult to know what to ask for such a work, I simply hope that whoever buys it will enjoy it as much as I, and be as impressed and emotionally humbled by the content as I was. Economic Analysis of the Environmental Impacts of

Economic Analysis of the Environmental Impacts of

Economic Analysis of the Environmental Impacts of Development Projects: It has always been thought that some level of pollution and waste is unavoidable in development projects. But no one has made much effort to quantify and assess the extent of this sort of damage. In this book a group of analysts from the Asian Development Bank and from the East West Center propose a means of constructing useful economic evaluations of the impacts of development projects on the environments in which they are constructed. This study demands the systematic evaluation of all the intentional and unintentional consequences of development initiatives before they are determined upon. It is essential reading for development economists, analysts and bankers. Originally published in
