ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ziegler, Charles E., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book is a study of Soviet ties with Northeast Asia-- China, Japan, and North and South Korea--in the s. It develops the concept of learning in Soviet foreign policy by examining the internal and external factors that ultimately led Gorbachev and other reformers to reject the fundamental premises upon which the Soviet system was based. The author examines the economic, political, ideological and military aspects of changing Soviet relations with the region, and argues that radical reform was due less to the pressures of the Cold War, than to factors internal to the Soviet Union. Singapore's Foreign Policy

Singapore's Foreign Policy

Singapore's Foreign Policy: In the years following its traumatic separation from Malaysia, Singapore has risen to become one of the leading economic powers in Southeast Asia. This economic strength has carried it through the recent East Asian economic crisis, as well as providing the resources for an excellent defence capability. Singapore's diplomatic achievements include relationships with countries across Asia and Europe, and ensure its interantional status, Yet, despite this success, Singapore's foreign policy has continued to be influenced by a deep seated sence of its own vulnerability. Politicians from the first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, onwards have focused on Singapore's limited physical size, potential domestic and international frailty due to racial tension and confirmed geographical location. These factors have combined to create a powerful nation-state which has never allowed itself to take its sovereign status for granted.Singapore's Foreign Policy is the first full-length English-language study of this subject and is an essential resource for all those interested in Singapore's international role.

Foreign Policy and Economic Dependence

Foreign Policy and Economic Dependence

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Richardson, Neil R., PUBLISHER: University of Texas Press, In an era of increasing interdependence among nations, the foreign policies of poor countries are becoming a subject of critical interest to scholars and the public alike. Neil R. Richardson adopts a political economy perspective to examine the foreign policy repercussions of international economic dependence. Are dependent countries compliant in their foreign policies, acquiescing to the preferences of the industrial giants on which they rely for foreign trade, investment, and aid revenues? Or are they instead prepared to defy their dominant economic partners? These are the major concerns of Richardson's rigorous investigation. The book begins with a characterization of economic dependence and its possible impact on the foreign policy decisions of dependent governments. Ideas from both "interdependence" and dependencia scholarship are extracted in order to explain the reliance of poor countries on their rich partners. These economics are linked to the foreign policies of poorer countries by considering how the mechanisms of dependence may create pressures on foreign policymakers. Several combinations of pressures are plausible, and each set yields a differing expectation about their foreign policies. The second part of the book is an empirical test of these foreign policy predictions for the years . Richardson analyzes the foreign policy behavior (as reflected in certain votes in the United Nations General Assembly) of a number of poor countries that are economically dependent on the United States to varying degrees. The results suggest several surprising conclusions. Contrary to one common assumption, these mostly Latin American and Caribbean countries are not necessarily locked into a condition of perpetual dependence. Richardson finds that the foreign policies of the economic dependencies are not easily manipulated by the United States. Not only do annual changes in their external economic reliance fail to correspond to their U.N. voting behavior, but the dependencies as a group are no longer clear voting allies of the United States after the late s. These and other results bear theoretical and policy implications that conclude the book. Foreign Policy and Economic Dependence will be of interest to specialists in quantitative international relations and American foreign policy.

Headline Diplomacy: How News Coverage Affects Foreign Policy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Seib, Philip, PUBLISHER: Praeger Publishers, Seib explores the many ways in which news coverage shapes the design and implementation of foreign policy. By influencing the political attitudes of opinion-shaping elites and the public at large, the news media can profoundly affect the conduct of foreign policy. Seib's text analyzes important examples of press influence on foreign affairs: the news media's definition of success and failure, as in reporting the Tet Offensive in Vietnam; how public impatience, fueled by news reports, can pressure presidents, as happened during the Iran hostage crisis of ; how presidents can anticipate and control news media coverage, as was done by the Bush administration during the Gulf War; how press revelation or suppression of secret information affects policy, as in the cases of the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban missile crisis, and various intelligence operations; how coverage of humanitarian crises affects public opinion; the challenges of live TV coverage; and the changing influence of news in the post-Cold War world. By covering a wide range of issues and examples, this important text will stimulate thoughtful appraisal of the relationships between the news media and those who make policy. It will be of interest to students and scholars in journalism, political communication, and international relations.

It is no secret that the debate over the nation of Israel’s claim to the city of Jerusalem has caused great controversy. While many who support the rights of the Jewish people present compelling emotional appeals, most fail to substantiate their arguments with hard evidence. To truly defend Israel on the political front will require more than emotional outcry; we must explore the legal and historical facts surrounding this conflict in order to preserve the rights of the Jewish people. Each chapter includes scenarios that utilise common emergency care presentations to clearly demonstrate how practitioners can identify critical illness at an early stage through understanding how disease and illness affect normal physiology and how this relates to the patient's clinical presentation. This ability to critically analyse physical findings assists the practitioner in becoming a specialist and directly saves lives. Key areas covered include: Cardiac Emergencies: including the new ALS guidelines Head Injuries Acute Surgical Emergencies Gynaecologic and Obstetric Emergencies Respiratory Distress Paediatric Emergencies Minor Trauma and Illness Major Trauma Acute Medical Emergencies The book also includes scenarios that cover the treatment of the elderly and those presenting with mental health emergencies. This important new book encourages readers to reflect on their clinical encounters to gain further insight into relevant treatment options and illustrates how critical thinking can be applied in emergency care. Essential reading for healthcare professionals working within emergency care and students requiring the fundamental skills necessary to competently undertake patient assessment and correctly prioritise patient care.

The Foundations of Newton's Alchemy

The Foundations of Newton's Alchemy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dobbs, Betty Jo Teeter / Dobbs, B. J. T., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Sir Isaac Newton left at his death a large collection of papers on alchemy, mostly in his own handwriting; the importance of this legacy has been debated ever since. When it first appeared, Professor Dobb's detailed analysis of the foundations of Newton's alchemical pursuits further stimulated interest in the subject by firmly establishing the importance of alchemy in Newton's thought. This book sets the foundations of Newton's alchemy in their historical context in Restoration England. It is shown that alchemical modes of thought and particularly those of a Neoplatonic kind, were quite strong in many of those who provided the dynamism for the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century and that these modes of thought had important relationships with general movements for reform in the same period: reform of religion, philosophy, learning, society and of man himself. Newton's alchemy is thus seen as a critical link between Renaissance Hermeticism and the rational chemistry and mechanics of the eighteenth century.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scheingold, Stuart A. / Feeley, Malcolm M., PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, Stuart A. Scheingold's landmark work introduced a new understanding of the contribution of rights to progressive social movements, and thirty years later it still stands as a pioneering and provocative work, bridging political science and sociolegal studies. In the preface to this new edition, the author provides a cogent analysis of the burgeoning scholarship that has been built on the foundations laid in his original volume. A new foreword from Malcolm Feeley of Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law traces the intellectual roots of "The Politics of Rights" to the classic texts of social theory and sociolegal studies. "Scheingold presents a clear, thoughtful discussion of the ways in which rights can both empower and constrain those seeking change in American society. While much of the writing on rights is abstract and obscure, "The Politics of Rights" stands out as an accessible and engaging discussion." -Gerald N. Rosenberg, University of Chicago "This book has already exerted an enormous influence on two generations of scholars. It has had an enormous influence on political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists, as well as historians and legal scholars. With this new edition, this influence is likely to continue for still more generations. "The Politics of Rights" has, I believe, become an American classic." -Malcolm Feeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley, from the foreword Stuart A. Scheingold is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Washington.

David Hilbert's Lectures on the Foundations of Physics

David Hilbert's Lectures on the Foundations of Physics

David Hilbert's Lectures on the Foundations of Physics : Volume 5 has three parts, dealing with General Relativity, Epistemological Issues, and Quantum Mechanics. The core of the first part is Hilbert’s two semester lecture course on ‘The Foundations of Physics’ (). This is framed by Hilbert’s published ‘First and Second Communications’ on the ‘Foundations of Physics’ () and by a selection of documents dealing with more specific topics like ‘The Principle of Causality’ or a lecture on the new concepts of space and time held in Bucharest in . The epistemological issues concern the intricate relation between nature and mathematical knowledge, in particular the question of irreversibility and objectivity () as well as the subtle question whether what Hilbert calls the ‘world equations’ are physically complete (). The last part deals with quantum theory in its early, advanced and mature stages. Hilbert held lecture courses on the mathematical foundations of quantum theory twice, before and after the breakthrough in . These documents bear witness to one of the most dramatic changes in the foundations of science.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shwayder, D. S., PUBLISHER: Springer, This treatise, in its first part, moves from a consideration of behavior and ulterance through a definition of assertion as a kind of utterance to a consideration of statements, conceived of as products of assertion, to be represented by pairs of testing procedures of verification and falsification. The treatise, in its second part, identifies a small number of basic forms of testing procedures, affiliated to the syncategoremata of classical philosophy, and uses these to represent all distinguishable, humanly producible, forms of statement. This same apparatus is used, in the third part of the treatise, to explain our conception of an object of reference and of various constructions from such objects. Particular attention is given to bodies and to other things met with in space and time, where it is finally argued that bodies, as we have explained them, are our most fundamental objects of reference.
