The Forgetting River: A Modern Tale of Survival, Identity,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Carvajal, Doreen, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, The unexpected and moving story of an American journalist who works to uncover her family's long-buried Jewish ancestry in Spain. Raised a Catholic in California, "New York Times" journalist Doreen Carvajal is shocked when she discovers that her background may actually be connected to "conversos" in Inquisition-era Spain, Jews who were forced to renounce their faith and convert to Christianity or face torture and death. With vivid childhood memories of Sunday sermons, catechism, and the rosary, Carvajal travels to the south of Spain, to the centuries-old Andalucian town of Arcos de la Frontera, to investigate her lineage and recover her family's original religious heritage. In Arcos, Carvajal is struck by the white pueblo's ancient beauty and the difficulty she encounters in probing the town's own secret history of the Inquisition. She comes to realize that fear remains a legacy of the Inquisition along with the cryptic messages left by its victims. Back at her childhood home in California, Carvajal uncovers papers documenting a family of Carvajals who were burned at the stake in the 16th-century territory of Mexico. Could the author's family history be linked to the hidden history of Arcos? And could the unfortunate Carvajals have been her ancestors? As she strives to find proof that her family had been forced to convert to Christianity six-hundred years ago, Carvajal comes to understand that the past flows like a river through time -and that while the truth might be submerged, it is never truly lost.

The Book of Learning and Forgetting

The Book of Learning and Forgetting

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Smith, Frank, PUBLISHER: Teachers College Press, The author eloquently contrasts a false and fabricated "official theory" that learning is work (used to justify the external control of teachers and students through excessive regulation and massive testing) with a correct but officially suppressed "classic view" that learning is a social process that can occur naturally and continually through collaborative activities. This book will be crucial reading in a time when national authorities continue to blame teachers and students for failures in education. It will help educators and parents to combat sterile attitudes toward teaching and prevent current practices from doing further harm.

Mirrors of Destruction: War, Genocide, and Modern Identity: Omar Bartov argues that war, genocide and modern identity have been intimately linked. By comparing German, French and Jewish sources, this book demonstrates the need to view the Holocaust within the context of our era&apos s predilection to resolve its conflicts over identity by massive application of destructive technologies.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ben-Rafael, Eliezer / Sternberg, Yitzhak, PUBLISHER: Brill Academic Publishers, This book is about contemporary sociological analysis: its discussions, contradictions and controversies. Authors from various backgrounds discuss developments on all continents. The 34 contributions are centered on six themes. The first is multiple modernities, showing us that there is no single road to the modernization of societies. The second theme is globalization, with new concepts like spatialization, world languages and new social movements. In part three, multiculturalism and diaspora movements are viewed as the pivotal factors for change in many societies. The fourth theme is the decline of the accountability of the state, concentrating on the shortcomings of traditional states and the emergence of new resources. In part five, the concept of postmodernity is discussed from the angles of identity, social reality, detachment and legacy. Finally, the sixth part, 'Toward a New Agenda’ looks into the future and lets sociology (or rather social knowledge) play a major part in today’ s society. This volume is a rich collection of practical examples and solid arguments by some of the best sociologists in the world. Buy Now

Victorian London: The Tale of a City

Victorian London: The Tale of a City

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Picard, Liza, PUBLISHER: St. Martin's Press, To Londoners, the years to were years of dramatic change and achievement. As suburbs expanded and roads multiplied, London was ripped apart to build railway lines and stations and life-saving sewers. The Thames was contained by embankments, and traffic congestion was eased by the first underground railway in the world. A start was made on providing housing for the "deserving poor." There were significant advances in medicine, and the Ragged Schools are perhaps the least known of Victorian achievements, in those last decades before universal state education. In the Great Exhibition managed to astonish almost everyone, attracting exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. But there was also appalling poverty and exploitation, exposed by Henry Mayhew and others. For the laboring classes, pay was pitifully low, the hours long, and job security nonexistent. Liza Picard shows us the physical reality of daily life. She takes us into schools and prisons, churches and cemeteries. Many practical innovations of the time--flushing lavatories, underground railways, umbrellas, letter boxes, driving on the left--point the way forward. But this was also, at least until the s, a city of cholera outbreaks, transportation to Australia, public executions, and the workhouse, where children could be sold by their parents for as little as 12 and streetpeddlers sold sparrows for a penny, tied by the leg for children to play with. Cruelty and hypocrisy flourished alongside invention, industry, and philanthropy. Buy Now
