China has a long tradition of making carpets. Old carpets, which date back to years ago, were used at imperial courts. However, the art of knitting carpets came to China between the 15th and the 17th century.The patterns of the old carpets were inspired by patterns on china and silk textiles. Some patterns depicted religious symbols with a dragon pattern. The symbols of these carpets had a Buddhist and Taoist basis.Thin cotton warp threads are visible in old carpets, which together with rough bristle, resulted in thick knots and made the carpet thick and, at the same time, flexible.
