Elementary Mathematics and Science Methods: Inquiry Teaching

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Foster, Gerald W., PUBLISHER: Wadsworth Publishing Company, Using constructivist theory and inquiry learning methods, Foster presents a text that both meets national standards and satisfies the needs of this emerging market. This book will appeal to those who have embraced the NCTCM standards and the reform philosophy of using collaborative learning, real-world applications, and the discovery method for teaching math and science concepts. Students learn how to teach children about math through science, and science through math. Parallels are drawn between the two subjects to make them applicable to everyday life. Foster shows the student how to encourage learning in their students (teaching how to learn) rather than merely teaching their students what to learn (i.e., memorization). The text uses practical activities for students to use in their future classroom to facilitate learning and create inquisitive learners.

Statement and Referent: An Inquiry Into the Foundations of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shwayder, D. S., PUBLISHER: Springer, This treatise, in its first part, moves from a consideration of behavior and ulterance through a definition of assertion as a kind of utterance to a consideration of statements, conceived of as products of assertion, to be represented by pairs of testing procedures of verification and falsification. The treatise, in its second part, identifies a small number of basic forms of testing procedures, affiliated to the syncategoremata of classical philosophy, and uses these to represent all distinguishable, humanly producible, forms of statement. This same apparatus is used, in the third part of the treatise, to explain our conception of an object of reference and of various constructions from such objects. Particular attention is given to bodies and to other things met with in space and time, where it is finally argued that bodies, as we have explained them, are our most fundamental objects of reference.

Pacifism is still an important topic today,as terrorism and dictatorial states abound. Many will find solace in Ends and Means, while others will find the book only a case study of the relationship of ethics to politics. Aldous Huxley examines common issues in a unique fashion. An Algebraic Approach to Geometry

An Algebraic Approach to Geometry

An Algebraic Approach to Geometry: This is a unified treatment of the various algebraic approaches to geometric spaces. The study of algebraic curves in the complex projective plane is the natural link between linear geometry at an undergraduate level and algebraic geometry at a graduate level, and it is also an important topic in geometric applications, such as cryptography. 380 years ago, the work of Fermat and Descartes led us to study geometric problems using coordinates and equations. Today, this is the most popular way of handling geometrical problems. Linear algebra provides an efficient tool for studying all the first degree (lines, planes) and second degree (ellipses, hyperboloids) geometric figures, in the affine, the Euclidean, the Hermitian and the projective contexts. But recent applications of mathematics, like cryptography, need these notions not only in real or complex cases, but also in more general settings, like in spaces constructed on finite fields. And of course, why not also turn our attention to geometric figures of higher degrees Besides all the linear aspects of geometry in their most general setting, this book also describes useful algebraic tools for studying curves of arbitrary degree and investigates results as advanced as the Bezout theorem, the Cramer paradox, topological group of a cubic, rational curves etc. Hence the book is of interest for all those who have to teach or study linear geometry: affine, Euclidean, Hermitian, projective it is also of great interest to those who do not want to restrict themselves to the undergraduate level of geometric figures of degree one or two.
