Gabbeh (Persian = raw, natural) refers to a rough and traditionally patterned carpet often knotted by Qashqai nomads from the Fars province in Iran. These are probably the best-known hand-knotted nomad carpets from Iran. They are made of hand-spun wool (for warp and pile); the yarn is dyed with plant-based colours. The carpets are thicker than other Persian carpets (up to 2.5 cm).The patterning and therefore the appearance of the Gabbeh carpets differs stylistically quite a lot from other Persian carpets. Gabbehs are less ornate throughout (e.g., arabesques or flowers). However you will still fine decorative, stylised elements (e.g. animals). This very remarkable fact has been established for several decades. The nomads mixed their traditional simplicity with the tastes of consumers from all over the world. So even today, under European influence - large, bright fields are used with frugal patterning.Note that Indian specimen of Gabbeh carpets differ greatly from the original. Above all, the wool quality is different - Persian wool is much softer and better overall. It is also more durable and robust. Persian Gabbeh carpets are simply modest and capture the original.
