Mantlepiece solid oak. Matching fender for around hearth. This is probably original to the house- . We have taken it off the wall as we have had a new stove fitted and the wood surround is not large enough for modern regulations. We really like it but cannot use it elsewhere. It does have some quite bad fire damage on the shelf from an old candle fire (under where the right hand candle holder is. We just covered it with a mat. A good carpenter could replace the shelf I assume. Otherwise it is nice varnished solid wood, and the curved detail under the mantel shelf is quite unusual and has an Arts and Crafts look we think. It is generally in very good condition although there is some minor damage on the back where it was fixed to the wall - see photo. We have taken it off the wall as we have had a new larger wood burning stove fitted and the wood surround is not large enough for it. Would be fine with a gas fire for example. We used it with the smaller inset multi fuel stove pictured and before than with an open fire and it was fine. We really like it but cannot use it elsewhere.
