This unit from US audio specialists Sherwood is technically an AV receiver, but since it doesn’t have any modern audio visual or digital inputs, just old-hat Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby 3 stereo, just consider it a pretty tasty hifi stereo amp with a good RDS FM/AM tuner (30 presets) thrown in and the facility to output to an additional centre speaker and a sub-woofer. It sounds very clean and punchy through decent speakers, the radio tuner is sensitive and gives good distortion-free reproduction, there’s a headphone socket and a full-function remote included – all you need for a good base for a hifi set-up. There’s also a convenient set of audio video inputs at the front which you could plug in a minijack to phono cable adapter to play your iPod, phone, laptop etc. Absolute steal at £49; in good physical and working order, serviced and ready to plug and play.
