This is a panel of a traditional mafrash, a box/bag made fo flat cloth. Used as storage in the tent and to transport items as the nomads moved to the ungrazed areas. The measurements were usually 50 cm high and wide and 100 cm long. Using the soumack technique the loose threads on the back remain in sight. Thus, it has a front and back. Please see detailed photo. A Mafrash is a type of bag that was used as a storage chest. By nomads living in tents. When it was filled it could also be used as a seat. On the road it was used to transport household goods. These nomads roamed to Iran and Turkmenistan from the Caucasus. Around a chest these four parts form a complete mafrash, which can be used as an ottomanor side table nicely. Great with swivel wheels. Prayer rug with so-called pendulum pattern; Fachralo or Gendje, Shirvan region in the Caucasus. Armenian culture. The early pieces, such as this rug, have a continuous connection of ornaments in the vertical direction, such as a pendulum of a clock - which explains the name. Restored. The edges on the left and right have been newly festooned. The ends had some worn knotting, this was fixed on the right side with a lockstitch. A protective band was sued over it onto the back. The black and brown wool has corroded a bit, it has become a bit more brittle and it is lower than the surrounding wool. The last 4 photos show the back.
