During the Roman civil war (), he was subsequently a rebellious emperor against emperor Didius Julianus, a crown prince (Caesar), appointed by Septinus Severus, and a rebellious emperor againt Septimius Severus, by whom he was eventually defeated in the battle at Lugdunum, on 19 February 197. Albinus was a man with great physical beauty and power; he was an experienced general, a skilled gladiator, a serious and often cruel commander; he has been called the "Catilina" of his time.
