Rare bust variety.Obv: SABINA AVGVSTA, diademed and draped bust right, hair bound in coil atop head Rev:IVNONI REGINAE, Juno standing left, holding patera and scepter. RIC 395b; BMC 943; RSC 43a. GoodVF, toned.Of the many dozens of examples found on-line of this reverse for Sabina, most have a simple, plain diadem or band around the hair, with either bust facing right or left. A few have the addition of grain ears held under the diadem, but none, however, had this specific hair style with the hair bound atop Sabina's head. Although this bust type in itself is not rare by any means, neither is it common, but in conjunction with this particular reverse type it is seemingly quite rare.Authenticity guaranteed. Hair braided in a tail, diadem. Sabina Empress wife of Hadrian father of the fatherlandReverse:VESTA, Vesta seated to the left with sceptre and Victoria.Reference: RIC 410Vibia Sabina (died in 136) was the wife of emperor Hadrian, and empress in Rome from approx. .She was a daughter of Matidia, a cousin of emperor Trajan, who himself had no children. Due to this relationship with the emperor, Vibia Sabina was predetermined for the political marriage with Hadrian, the successor of Trajan. The marriage was arranged by Pompeia Plotina, the wife of Trajan. The marriage took place in 100, causing Hadrian's position as successor to be strengthened. It became an unhappy marriage. Hadrian paid little attention to her and even openly showed more interest for other married women and young men such as Antinous. The marriage remained childless. However, Sabina's adulterous adventures were not tolerated. Sabina's death by natural causes in 136 was questioned, and it is possible that Hadrian poisoned or or that she committed suicide.
