Clodius Albinus, A.D. Silver denarius (1.72 g, 17 mm), struck in Rome, as Caesar, around A.D., by Septimius Severus. Head of Clodius Albinus, facing right. Reverse side: Aesculapius facing right, with a stick with a snake coiled around it, RIC 2 (rare);Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus (), or simply Clodius Albinus. During the Roman civil war (), he was subsequently a rebellious emperor against emperor Didius Julianus, a crown prince (Caesar), appointed by Septinus Severus, and a rebellious emperor againt Septimius Severus, by whom he was eventually defeated in the battle at Lugdunum, on 19 February 197. Albinus was a man with great physical beauty and power; he was an experienced general, a skilled gladiator, a serious and often cruel commander; he has been called the "Catilina" of his time. Septimius Severius appointed Caracalla Caesar on the 27 th of May 196 and after the fall of Byzantium in the summer, he marched on Rome which Clodius Albinus had abandoned, followed by the majority of the Senate. Seeking refuge in Gaul, Albinus was finally vanquished on the 19th of February near Lyon.
