In 194, Albinus is Consul for the second time with Septimius Severus. Their enmity was sealed after the victory of Septimius Severius over Pescennius Niger. Albinus, who stayed in Rome, proclaimed himself Augustus. Septimius Severius appointed Caracalla Caesar on the 27 th of May 196 and after the fall of Byzantium in the summer, he marched on Rome which Clodius Albinus had abandoned, followed by the majority of the Senate. Seeking refuge in Gaul, Albinus was finally vanquished on the 19th of February near Lyon.
