The group included several dozen soldiers, as well as nine women and eighteen children. After traveling only a mile and a half, they were attacked by five hundred Potawatomi warriors. In under an hour, fifty-two members of Heald's party were killed, and the rest were taken prisoner; the Potawatomi then burned Fort Dearborn before returning to their villages. These events are now seen as a foundational moment in Chicago's storied past. The medal is made of bronze with a beautiful green patina all over the medal. On top of the medal the word "IJser" is enamelled in a green field, on the reverse with the monogram "A", representing King Albert. On the front of the medal we see a man with a lance, who symbolises the Belgian soldier who brought the German army to a standstill. The reverse shows the battlefield with a wounded (Belgian) lion and the word IJser again The Ribbon is red with black borders, which symbolises blood and death, the battle of the Yser was a bloody battle in which Belgian soldiers died which amounted to 1/3 of the total Belgian army.Excellent collect worthy condition,These medals are getting hard to obtain.
