Named Phemba, these figurines represent the founders of the clan or effigies of deceased sovereigns, they have different functions within the Kongo worship universe. Standing on straight legs, this maternity has all of the characteristics of the Kongo Phemba figurines: headdress, bulging glass-eyes and marked teeth. Origin: Yombe Vili/DRC, collected by an army officer in the region of Kinshasa. Materials: wood, glass. Height: 43 cm. Width: 13 cm. Condition: patinated, in its original condition, with minor age-related cracks which do not spoil the piece. Read more
