This watercolour is an ingenious composition, which, rather than focusing on the imposing cathedral, shows the large medieval structure in a slightly misty light in the background and partly obscured by autumnal trees which dominate the foreground of figures walking along the promenade. Reginald Smith was born at Batheaston nr Bath, Somerse and later worked in Bristol. He has many Cornish titles to his name. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Walker Gallery, and the Royal Institute.
