Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights

Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights (12). A film by Nevline Nnaji. US, minutes. To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defence () Black History Studies presents a series of screenings that look at the role of women in the Black Panther Party in March for International Women's Month. Where do Black women activists fit into the epochal struggles for equality and liberation during the s and 70s? This feature-length documentary unearths the story of black women's political marginalization—between the male-dominated Black Power movement and second wave feminism, which was largely white and middle class—showing how each failed to recognize black women's overlapping racial and gender identities. Archival footage and in-depth interviews with former members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), SNCC's Black Women's Liberation Committee, the Black Panther Party, Third World Women's Alliance, and the National Black Women's Feminist Organization reveal how black women mobilized, fought for recognition, and raised awareness of how sexism and class issues affected women of color within and outside The Black Power Movement and mainstream feminism. Prominently featured activists include Frances Beale, Angela Davis, Kola Boof, Nikki Giovanni, Rosemari Mealy, Judy Richardson, Gwendolyn Simmons, Deborah Singletary, and Eugenia Wiltshire. Required viewing for Women's Studies, African American Studies, and students of the Civil Rights Movement. Venue Details: Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Town Hall Approach Road, Tottenham Green, London N15 4RX, United Kingdom. Date: March . Time: 7:00 pm - pm. Category: Arts | Visual Arts | Film / Cinema. Price: Entry: GBP 8.00.

Voices in Our Blood: America's Best on the Civil Rights

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Meacham, Jon, PUBLISHER: Random House, Newsweek managing editor Jon Meacham has compiled what the nation's best writers had to say about the movement as it happened, offering a narrative that begins before World War II and takes us to the affirmative-action wars still being fought today. The success of the civil rights movement was never inevitable, and the story of race in America is much more of a cliffhanger than most would think. Offering classic narratives by Richard Wright and Eudora Welty and the writings of artists and journalists such as Robert Penn Warren, Maya Angelou, and David Halberstam, this groundbreaking anthology is the premier source for the most important interpretations of the civil rights movement, past and present. Voices in Our Blood is a compelling history, vividly told.

Human Rights from Below: Achieving Rights Through Community

Human Rights from Below: Achieving Rights Through Community

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ife, Jim, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In Human Rights from Below, Jim Ife shows how human rights and community development are problematic terms but powerful ideals, and that each is essential for understanding and practising the other. Ife contests that practitioners - advocates, activists, workers and volunteers - can better empower and protect communities when human rights are treated as more than just a specialist branch of law or international relations, and that human rights can be better realised when community development principles are applied. The book offers a long overdue assessment of how human rights and community development are invariably interconnected. It highlights how critical it is to understand the two as a basis for thinking about and taking action to address the serious challenges facing the world in the twenty-first century. Written both for students and for community development and human rights workers, Human Rights from Below brings together the important fields of human rights and community development, to enrich our thinking of both.
