Published in instalments in folio, it is not just a translation of the famous Recueil et parallèle, which traces a first historical gallery of universal architecture buildings with images of building types classified by function and plan and anticipates its much more famous composition lessons at the École Polithecnique, based not on real cases but on abstract projects, almost double the original content with over three hundred new factories, mainly Venetian, by Palladio, Sansovino, Scamozzi, Lombardo, Guglielmo Bergamasco (de Grigis), da Ponte, Scarpagnino, Quarenghi, Calderari, Valadier, Selva and contemporary projects of Italian, French and German architects. This historical gallery of examples is a precursor of composition didactics.
