The Psychology of the Chess Player

The Psychology of the Chess Player

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fine, Reuben / Sloan, Sam, PUBLISHER: Ishi Press, Just what is the special ability that sets great chess players apart from other men has long been a topic of intense speculation. Unfortunately, very little scientific work has been clone on the question. The major stumbling block has been that psychologists who have worked on the question, like Binet. have not been first-rank chess players and so have not had direct access to the mental processes involved in grandmaster chess. On the other hand, chess players are not usually first-rate psychologists. There is one important exception to this rule-a man who has produced a remarkable book in this area. This is Dr. Reuben Fine, one of the great chess players of this century (he has played on equal terms with Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Smyslov, and others) and a qualified psychoanalyst. Dr. Fine has called upon his own understanding of chess processes and his unrivaled contacts in the chess world in this attempt to analyze both the game of chess itself and its peculiar appeals, particularly to male players as opposed to females, to isolate its inner meaning, and to categorize and understand the special combination of characteristics that make tip a chess champion. Some of the great players studied here, such as Lasker, Capablanca, and Botvinnik, Dr. Fine has known, both in terms of chess and as personalities. He discusses other great players of the past, Staunton, Andersen, Morphy, as their personalities are revealed in books, articles, and legends that have grown up about them. The result is an unexpected synthesis, far from a simplistic answer to the basic question, which describes what these men did and did not have in common. All in all. Dr. Fine's searching analyses make an absorbing book-brilliantly written, sometimes controversial, always stimulating.

Self-Study Approaches and the Teacher-Inquirer:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ezer, Hanna, PUBLISHER: Sense Publishers, This book examines self-study methodologies and their relevance to professional growth among teachers. The book puts forward the following arguments: Self-study as a research approach involves basic research skills, therefore constituting an important step for non-professional inquirers aspiring to more complex research. Self-study is a powerful tool in support of professional growth among teachers. Self-study comprises a set of approaches, among them instructional situations case analysis, critical autobiography, and action research. The book offers some interesting perspectives on the following issues: -The book focuses on the writer's experience as a teacher educator who has elicited and motivated self-studies among student teachers and teachers. -The book brings together three related self-study methodologies: instructional situations case analysis, critical autobiography, and action research. -The book offers a new perspective on implementing and analyzing instructional situation cases through the "authentic case of teaching" and the "expected case of teaching," a perspective developed by the writer and implemented in her classes. -The book provides a fresh view of critical autobiography as a powerful tool teachers can use to examine their own practice and professional development. -The book introduces critical discourse analysis as a useful tool for researchers. This tool enables teacher-inquirers to reveal their 'sense of professional self' and their professional identity as it emerges in teaching cases they provide. -Teachers and researchers can easily apply the methodologies described in this book to their own teaching and research arenas.

Encouraging Sustainable Behavior: Psychology and the

Encouraging Sustainable Behavior: Psychology and the

Increasingly it is being recognized that consumer behavior may be a key trigger in the march toward sustainable development. Several lines of psychological theory and approaches have been developed relatively independently, each of which may provide major implications and action points on how consumers might be moved toward more sustainable behavior. This book is the first that brings together this variety of perspectives and theoretical angles around the common ambition of sustainable development.

Psychology for Musicians: Understanding and Acquiring the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lehmann, Andreas C. / Sloboda, John A. / Woody, Robery H., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, What is it that accounts for the differences between musical beginners, advanced music makers, and world class performers? Virtually everyone likes music and has the capacity to be musical in some way (despite what some may say about themselves). Yet far fewer people come to be so involved with it that they identify themselves as musicians, and fewer still become musicians of international class. Psychology for Musicians provides the basis for answering this question. Examining the processes that underlie the acquisition of musical skills, Lehmann, Sloboda, and Woody provide a concise, accessible, and up-to-date introduction to psychological research for musicians.

Sweet Anticipation: Music and the Psychology of Expectation

Sweet Anticipation: Music and the Psychology of Expectation

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huron, David, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Winner, Wallace Berry Award presented by the Society for Music Theory. The psychological theory of expectation that David Huron proposes in "Sweet Anticipation" grew out of the author's experimental efforts to understand how music evokes emotions. These efforts evolved into a general theory of expectation that will prove informative to readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as those interested in music. The book describes a set of psychological mechanisms and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music. All examples of notated music can be heard on the Web. Huron proposes that emotions evoked by expectation involve five functionally distinct response systems: reaction responses (which engage defensive reflexes); tension responses (where uncertainty leads to stress); prediction responses (which reward accurate prediction); imagination responses (which facilitate deferred gratification); and appraisal responses (which occur after conscious thought is engaged). For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and spine-tingling chills. Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia we experienced as we apprehend the world.

Hearing Eye II: The Psychology of Speechreading and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Campbell, R. / Campbell, Ruth / Burnham, Douglas, PUBLISHER: Psychology Press, It is ten years since Dodd and Campbell published a book with the title Hearing By Eye. That was the first volume that considered speechreading (lipreading as it was then called) as a psychological process of interest beyond its direct applications in hearing loss and deafness. It has remained the acknowledged title in its field. Since then, practical and theoretical research in this area has expanded hugely and the present volume outlines some of these developments. The book comprises fifteen invited chapters by leading international researchers in psychology, psycholinguistics, experimental and clinical speech science and computer engineering. It gives intriguing answers to theoretical questions (what are the mechanisms by which heard and seen speech combine?) and practical ones (what makes a good speechreader? Can machines be programmed to recognize seen, and seen-and-heard speech?) The book is written in a non-technical way and starts to articulate a behaviorally-based but cross-disciplinary program of research in understanding how natural language can be delivered by different modalities.
