As the Dutch SS was to become an elite unit, not everyone could join. Selections took place based on race, attitude towards life, personality and physical condition.The importance of having a branch of Himmler’s SS in The Netherlands rested on four considerations. Firstly was that the SS wanted a prominent position in the occupied countries. Secondly the SS considered the foundation of the Dutch SS of great importance for the recruitment of volunteers for the Waffen-SS. The third consideration was to ‘push’ Mussert towards the wished for great-German thought. And the fourth consideration was the fact that the foundation of the Dutch SS had important propaganda value.Mussert was informed in June of an order by Hitler to recruit Dutchmen for the ‘Wiking’ division of the Waffen-SS. The Dutch would get their own Standarte ‘Westland’.In first instance Mussert refused his cooperation, though after a while he did make concessions to avoid to bring his own position in danger. In order to save his position, Mussert agreed in September with the foundation of the Dutch SS as a variant of the Allgemeine SS. And so was the Dutch SS founded by Mussert on September , formally as a sub-division (Afdeling XI) of the NSB. Henk Feldmeijer was appointed as ‘Voorman’, who in daily practice didn’t take much notice of Mussert and his NSB. Feldmeijer tried to hook up more and more with the German Allgemeine (political) SS. On November the name was changed to ‘Germaansche SS in Nederland’. This name-change emphasised that the Dutch aspect was no longer the most important, though the “Germaansche” was. They had approx. members and was foremost a political formation in addition to being a recruitment pool for the Waffen-SS. The Dutch SS were dressed in a black uniform, that was based on that of the German SS. Towards the end of , the ‘Germaansche SS in Nederland’ virtually only existed on paper because of the change of tides in the war for the Germans and their followers.The lot contains 4 copies of the weekly Storm of the ‘Germaansche SS in Nederland’. Propaganda via Auslandsrundfunk - Die Radioreden "Deutsche Hörer" von Thomas Mann aus dem britischen Exil (): Dem Thema der Rundfunkarbeit deutscher Emigranten im Exil, darunter auch den Radioreden von Thomas Mann wird in der Forschungsliteratur weitgehend wenig und wenn, dann meist oberflächliche Beachtung beigemessen. Die nachstehende Hausarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Radioreden unter dem Gesichtspunkt des Mediums Rundfunk als Propagandamittel. Eingangs bietet sie im 2.Kapitel eine Einbettung in die politische Ausgangssituation Thomas Manns¿, indem sie anhand wichtiger Stationen sein politisches Engagement in der Entwicklung, die zu den Radioreden, dem eindringlichsten Produkt seines politisch-publizistischen Schaffens, führte, liefert. Das 3.Kapitel beleuchtet die spezielle Rolle des Auslandsrundfunks in der Kriegsführung des 2. Weltkrieges. Welche Funktion erfüllte der Rundfunk als Propagandamittel, was sollte erreicht werden und wo stieß er an Grenzen Im 4.Kapitel geht die Verfasserin speziell auf die britische monopolisierte Radiostation BBC als maßgebliches Propagandaorgan Großbritanniens 3 ein, über dessen Äther Thomas Mann seine Radioansprachen 'Deutsche Hörer!' an die Deutschen verschickte. Beginnend bei den strukturierten Rahmenbedingungen, in denen der BBC wirkte über eine Betrachtung der Empfangssituation in Deutschland bis hin zur Rolle Thomas Manns¿ im BBC als deutscher Exilant. Die nachstehende Hausarbeit stellt nicht den Anspruch einer vollständigen Auseinandersetzung mit den Radioreden 'Deutsche Hörer!' von Thomas Mann. So werden Inhalte/ Form der Radioansprachen sowie Wirkung, die sie bei den Deutschen in der Rezeption hervorriefen, nicht berücksichtigt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Thomas Manns¿ Radioreden 'Deutsche Hörer!' anhand der näheren Beleuchtung der politischen Bedeutung des Mediums Rundfunk aus dem Exil als Propaganda- und Kriegsmittel im 'psychological warfare' des 2. Weltkriegs einmal mehr in das Blickfeld der Betrachtung zu rücken. Dies geschieht durch ein Literaturstudium mehrerer Quellen, aus denen zusammengetragen ein klares Bild herausgearbeitet werden soll. Das Schlagwort Radio-/ Ätherkrieg, wie es oft verwendet wird, rechtfertigt und zeigt die Wichtigkeit einer Auseinandersetzung mit den Radioreden unter dieser Zielsetzung.
