This vintage Posser is also known as a Swiftsure vacuum washer. It has a wooden handle with flared base and copper inner with holes. These were very popular in the early ’s for washing clothes in a tub. The condition is reasonably good with a few dents that one would expect with an item of this age and what it has been used for. There is a brass plaque inscribed. “British Vacuum Washer Co. The Swiftsure Patent No . Islington Liverpool.” This is ideal for any collector of natural and cultural history. Measurements Height =Wooden Handle 21 cm. Copper base Width 24 cm. There is a photograph of a 2 litre bottle of water to give an instant perspective. The vacuum washer was actually a posser (sometimes known as a dolly), a stick-like implement used to mix the washing when it was in a tub. As electric washing machines became more common, these manual items fell out of use. The Swiftsure was kept vertical at all times, the user hauling it up and down.
