Carsten Niebuhr traveled to Arabia at the invitation of the King of Denmark with five others. They dressed as Muslims so they could travel on a ship of pilgrims headed to Mecca. He stayed from and was the only survivor from the expedition. On his return he wrote Travels to Arabia and this two volume set. A very expensive publication with very high quality engraved illustrations and maps. Dutch edition was one of just three published during Nieburhr's lifetime. Part 2 has 456 pages. Contemporary half calf.These copies are in incredible condition with solid bindings and no evidence of water damage. There is some scuffing on the leather spine and the leather corners (slightly bumped).I count 125 plates and maps (7 folding including the famous, large, nine-fold map of Yemen and a large map of Sinus Arabicus).
