The way it is knotted and the diversity in patterns make this carpet unique and emphasise its authentic and artisanal character. Afghanistan is located east of Iran and also borders Turkmenistan and Pakistan. Afghan rugs have patterns in the shape of elephant's feet, 'Göls', or octagons (8 sides), often surrounded by angular flowers in dark blue or anthracite. Afghan carpets are durable rugs, made of shining wool, often from goats, on a woollen warp (bobbin thread).
