He served with the S.A 1st Infantry Division which converted into the 6th Armoured Division at the end of and would have been present at Gazala and El Alamein. William first served with 33 Coy Motor Transport Q.S.C then with 33rd S.A Mobile General Workshops Technical Services Corps and finally with the 44th Railway and Harbour Brigade - Tank Corps.
