A selection of 12 tribal masks believed to be African in style and bought around 25 years ago as a theme to a wall in our house. It is impossible to truly date these items as they had been previously owned by a person that also bought them second hand. These would be interesting items to own or to sell on in an antique shop etc. I recently saw a small mask of similar quality in a shop in Derbyshire and priced at £7. West African hand carved hardwood stand. 16" high-11" diameter. Heavy hard wood, nice colour. A hand carved stand from West Africa. Overall height 16 inches. Carved in three pieces, to round pieces 11 inches in diameter and the contorted figure of a man, and then fixed with iron nails. I don't know what the wood is but it's a heavy hard wood. It has a very nice colour, and seems to have some age to it. Some signs of wear, probably from polishing. Collection from Nonington CT15 4HY

African carved wooden tribal statue

Full size statue that stands over 5ft tall. It was bought from a tribe in Africa and is carved from solid wood. It was explained to me that it symbolises peace, serenity and security and I can honestly say that it's brought me unbelievably good luck in the last 4 years I've owned it. I'm really sad to have to sell it but I have no choice due to me emigrating to Denmark.

Malachite carved pair of tortoises/turtles. African., I am selling a lovely pair or malachite tortoises (turtles?) which I bought out in West Africa when I lived out there in .The larger tortoise's maximum dimensions are:Length 80mm Height 25 mm Width 55mm On my not terribly accurate kitchen scales, they weigh 260 g, but think they weigh a little low. These are a gorgeous example of African hand carving. The under sides of the tortoises are unpolished and show naturally occurring malachite before it is polished. You can still see the marks made by the person who originally carved it.Malachite is a bright green gemstone that is actually an ore of copper and is found wherever copper is mined. Malachite is usually crossed with bands of different shades of green, ranging from bright sea foam to the characteristic emerald green, to very dark blackish green. The beauty of malachite lies in its unusual, eye-soothing soft deep green colour and the bands of colour in the the stone when is it expressed artistically in the carving of it. Skilled artisans can incorporate the coloured bands of the malachite into the design of a carving or piece of jewellery. It has been used as an ornamental material by people for thousands of years, from the Far East to Ancient Greece, where it has been carved into statues and statuettes, miniatures, beads and jewellery. Genuine vintage hand carved giant African wall mask 81 x 28c

This is a genuine vintage hand carved giant African wall mask, not a modern copy or retro piece. The actual age is unknown but I bought it from a friend about 40 years ago, he had it for over 10 years so it is at least 50 years old. The wood is unknown but from its reddish-brown hue & coarse roey graining, I would guess it's African mahogany which was a common wood used to carve masks like these. The mask is carved from a single log (see tree rings in the last photo) and measures 32 inches high from chin to the ears of the deer, 11 inches wide at the cheeks and is about 7.5 inches deep (81 x 28 x 19cm) I've stood it by the wheel of a Mercedes saloon car so you can get an idea of the size, I've also placed a 1.25 litre coke bottle next to it for comparison. The mask had already suffered some minor damage before I bought it. I've listed it here and you can see from the photos. It is a very impressive and attractive piece of vintage African art and would make a great centrepiece for a display and is equally impressive as a solo display item. Damage: Antler Inserts (possibly bone) on foreheads of Antelope missing (these were missing from the time I first saw it about 50 years ago). Right deer head had split off the main carving and was glued back on, right ear chipped. Left ear on left deer has chipped tip. Chips on the front of the nose. Top half of the left horn is missing.
