Baroque / classical violin by George Barton, London

A violin by George Barton, London, In baroque/classical setup. This is a delightful period violin of very comfortable dimensions (length of back: 351mm; sounding string length: 312mm). It has an attractive one-piece back and a striking one-piece table. Equally notable is the broad light middle strip of the purfling, giving the violin a characterful look. The violin is very responsive and plays easily and with a sweet tone across the range. It has been played professionally and has recently been fitted with a new baroque bridge and tailpiece by luthier Martin Bowers, Maldon. Inscribed internally: Made by George Barton Butcher Row, Temple Bar London Branded on the upper back and lower rib: G. Barton, London George Barton - like many London instrument makers of the late 18th century - supplied simple instruments to the trade, but also sold more refined ones (like the one offered here) bearing his own name. This violin has had a recent auction estimate of £ at Brompton's Fine and Rare Instruments, London. A viola of similar quality by this maker is currently for sale at Moseley Violins, Birmingham for £. Condition: The instrument is overall in an excellent condition, with only very minor repairs and no bass bar or sound post cracks. We have a lovely old French school desk for sale, bought from a French 'Manoir' house. Available when we return from France next week. Oak slatted bench and desk on metal legs. Two storage shelves underneath, inkwell holes. Lovely patina, some marks, scribbles and stickers as you would expect with age and kids but nothing too serious and could easily be sanded back to a clean finish. Sturdy solid item.
