Geographies of Global Issues

Geographies of Global Issues: Geographies of children and young people is a rapidly emerging sub-discipline within human geography. There is now a critical mass of established academic work, key names within academia, growing numbers of graduate students and expanding numbers of university level taught courses. There are also professional training programmes at national scales and in international contexts that work specifically with children and young people. In addition to a productive journal of Children's Geographies, there's a range of monographs, textbooks and edited collections focusing on children and young people published by all the major academic presses then there is a substantive body of work on younger people within human geography and active authors and researchers working within international contexts to warrant a specific Major Reference Work on children's and young people's geographies. The volumes and sections are structured by themes, which then reflect the broader geographical locations of the research.

Wir sind das Volk!: 20 Jahre Deutsche Einheit und die Mauer ist weg. riefen die Menschen bei den Montagsdemonstrationen in Leipzig und später in der ganzen DDR 'Wir sind das Volk!. Die friedliche Protestbewegung führte zum Fall der Mauer und zur Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten. Thomas Kellner reiste entlang der neudeutschen Grenze einmal um die gesamte neue Bundesrepublik. Polaroids von der Grenze, was heute Deutschland ist, werden kombiniert mit Zitaten aus Zeitungen, Romanen und seinem Tagebuch zu einer Erinnerungsreise in die Entstehungsgeschichte des Mauerfalls. Mitten in Deutschland zu leben, und zwar nicht in der geographischen Mitte, sondern inmitten der neuen Grenzen, inmitten eines neuen Volumens, hieß die Einheit an Hand eines neuen Grenzverlaufes zu dokumentieren, eine neue Position zu beziehen, in einem Verfahren des sogenannten mappings den Grenzverlauf der vereinten Teile zu visualisieren und dem Ausruf Wir sind das Volk! eine gesamtdeutsche Dimension zu verleihen. (Thomas Kellner) Wir sind das Volk! zeichnet die deutsche Grenze und somit die Kontur Deutschlands punktuell nach und führt dem Betrachter im selben Atemzug die vielen Facetten und möglicherweise auch unbekannten Orte am Rand der Republik vor Augen. Gleichzeitig ermöglichen Textfragmente und Zitate, welche jedem Bild der Serie zur Seite gestellt wurden, dem Betrachter eine Reise in die eigene Erfahrungswelt anzutreten. This peaceful protest movement led to the fall of the Wall and later to the reunion of the two German countries. In Thomas Kellner traveled along the border all around the newly formed country. In this book polaroids are combined with quotes from newspapers, magazines, novels and his diary to become a journey back to how the wall fell down. Living in the middle of Germany, not geographically in the middle but within the new frontiers, within a new volume, meant to document the German unity by means of a new line of the border, to take up a new position. It meant to visualize the united parts line of the border by a procedure called mapping and to give the exclamation We are the people! an all-German dimension. We are the people! traces the German border and with it, point by point, the shape of Germany. In the same breath it shows recipients the many facets and probably the unknown places of the republic at its fringes. Besides the fragments of texts and quotations which are added to every photograph of the series, enable the recipient to start a journey into the own experiences.
