Cognac leather and chrome MR20 Knoll Mies van der Rohe MR20

A pair of vintage cognac leather and chrome MR20 Knoll Mies van der Rohe MR20 armchairs previously owned by the architect Christoph Bon. These chairs were acquired from the estate of the World renowned Swiss architect Christoph Bon (provenance available on request) who was most famous for designing the Barbican in London and were situated in his Thames island home. They are in very good vintage condition with some slight signs of wear to the leather seats as you would expect given their age. This amounts to some light scratches and some stress marks at the seat sides (as shown in the photos) where the leather wraps around the chrome frame and is, in any event, nothing more than cosmetic. There are no rips or tears to the leather, which has now been fully nourished and the chrome work is in excellent condition with very minor surface scratches to the base runners under the seat area. The Knoll version of the MR20 is immediately recognisable by virtue of the tied corsetry style back which gives the chair an elegant and sophisticated look. This is complemented by the hook and eyelet base that along with the corsetry holds the elements of the thick leather seat and back sections in place. The MR range of chairs by Mies van der Rohe represents the very earliest designs he created using a cantilever base. The chairs were inspired by French and British 19th century tubular steel rocking and campaign chairs, the most notable of which was designed by RW. Winfield for the great exhibition in . Born in the medieval city of Aachen, Germany Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a pivotal figure in the Modernist design and architectural movement throughout the ’s and 30’s and went on to direct the Bauhaus from .
