Im Verlauf dieser Begriffsgeschichte, die durch den sozial- und ökonomiekritischen Einfluss von Marx und die sprachtheoretische Wende des linguistic turn gebrochen ist, kommt es zu einer Dissoziation der im Idealismus aufeinander verweisenden Einheitsprinzipien Subjekt und Synthesis. Das Verhältnis der Formen der gesellschaftlichen Synthesis zu den Subjekten der sozialen Praxis wird bei Adorno und Habermas mit sich unterscheidendem Rückgriff auf den Idealismus und Marx reflektiert und verläuft sich mit der kommunikationstheoretischen Wende in eine Theorie der Intersubjektivität, die sprachpragmatisch begründet wird. In dieser doppelten Rezeption des Idealismus einerseits und des Sprachpragmatismus andererseits treffen sich Habermas und Brandom, wenn auch mit unterschiedlichen philosophischen Intentionen, die sich im differenten Vernunftbegriff anzeigen.
