Early 19th Century Irish Fiddle Front Dresser In Original Paint
An exceptional example of a fiddle front Irish dresser in original paint. Pine construction with three shelves (plate bar to the top shelf) over two drawers atop an open fiddle base. Stylistically dressers of this nature were to be found in the north and west of the island, this one hailing from the latter. They played an important part in the furnishing and everyday life of the Irish household. Claudia Kinmonth outlines in her book ‘Irish Country Furniture ’, page 99, “The dresser is unique amongst the furniture of the Irish kitchen because of its primary role as an aesthetic and decorative focal point, a role simultaneously combined with the functional storage of kitchen ‘ware’ and utensils…The dresser and the ware it held were precious and decorative, highlighting the owner’s status and providing a talking point and a link with past generations.”. Very much in usable condition and is a comfortable size. Often these dressers have been stripped of their paint work, so to find so rich a texture and colour is scarce. Circa .
