Given the desire of the King to create a distinction of extraordinary rank, comparable to other traditional decorations, it was decided to put the Order under the Patronage of a saint: Saint Hermenegild, who had been the King of Sevilleand also a martyr in defence of the Christian faith.Its first regulations were published in , being renewed later in and . Its most recent regulation dates from .
