Malay is a village in Iranian Kurdistan, Kurdish area. Hence the name Malayer or some carpets. These Kurds are known for their indestructible rugs. They used iron combs and hit these with hammers to tighten the wool so that the hairs stand up straight and fit very closely together, nearly impenetrable for dirt. They are nicknamed "Iron Carpets". The cotton warp threads were made wet so they would shrink,making the rug even tighter. This rug also has this quality. It has to be transported rolled-up – otherwise the warp threads may break.That is how tight and firm they are. Read more
