Highly Collectible Caucasian Rug - Early 20th century

South Caucasus, early 20th century. This kind of carpets are never big, approx. 100 x 150 cm and they are always of very high quality. Even in that time they were meant as a status symbol. No ordinary carpets. Has been made in great craftsmanship with the utmost refined combinations and nuances. The knot density is unusually high, knots/m², quite flat, wool on wool knotted. This carpet has a central field which is very soft green, a pale celadon. An unusual and rare colour, with symbols of fertility everywhere. The main edge is called Kufic border. Shami means Syrian. A reference to the Kufic writing system and it is an early ornament that appears for the first time during the 19th century and in the first quarter of the 20th century. A beautiful yellow gold on very dark blue background. Can be Karaghasli, because those often have a yellow gold main edge. Condition: in a very beautiful and original condition, worn but not out-worn edges. The green is somewhat more yellow in one corner due to the sunlight. A small repaired tear in the centre of the dge and an old restauration, a small piece of 1.5 x 4 cm is knotted in a skilled way. See the XXL photos of both the front and backside. Read More

This wonderful rug has a short and rough fleece, typical of the region's high-quality production. The wool is shiny and friable customary in Khorasan. The design represents a central medallion decorated with guillochés, (Herati emblems) and the rug has always been washed at intervals of 4/5 years and carefully preserved. The rug has a beautiful experienced patina, that does not conceal its shining colours that become more intense after every washing (the last was in ). Dimensions: 290 x 240 cm with a density of about knots per square metre.
